Michael Shabot, MD, FACS, FCCM, FACMI, and Rod Brace, Ph.D., announced that Mark Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH has joined Relia Healthcare Advisors as a partner. Relia Healthcare Advisors provide high-reliability organizational consulting and executive leadership development services to healthcare systems. The trio forms a team of advisors assisting healthcare executives in meeting healthcare's unique and complex challenges. 

Dr. Chassin is one of the world’s leading experts in healthcare quality, patient safety, high reliability and process improvement. In 2022, Dr. Chassin’s work was recognized with the John M. Eisenberg Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Chassin is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) of the National Academy of Sciences. He served as President and CEO of The Joint Commission for 14 years, leading the world’s pre-eminent healthcare standard-setting and accrediting body.  Dr. Chassin has been a leader in the introduction of the concepts of high reliability and zero harm to health care. He directed the creation of The Joint Commission programs that disseminated strategies, tools, and training programs for healthcare organizations to speed their progress toward high reliability.

Before his tenure at The Joint Commission, Dr. Chassin served as Guggenheim Professor of Health Policy and founding Chairman of the Department of Health Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Among other research accomplishments, Dr. Chassin established an NIH-funded center to study and ameliorate racial and ethnic healthcare disparities. He also served as the Executive Vice President for Excellence in Patient Care at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Previously, Dr. Chassin served as New York State Health Commissioner. He is a board-certified internist, practiced emergency medicine for 12 years, has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, and has been invited to speak to audiences around the world on topics related to healthcare quality and patient safety.

Dr. Chassin received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a master’s degree in public health from UCLA.

Dr. Michael Shabot is the former Executive Vice President and System Chief Clinical Officer at Memorial Hermann Health System, while Dr. Rod Brace is the former Regional President and Chief Learning Officer. The Memorial Hermann Health System includes 17 hospitals, 20 ambulatory surgical centers, and 300 ambulatory sites with private, employed, and academic medical groups totaling 6,500 physicians and an Accountable Care Organization (ACO).
